What is a recreational fire?

A recreational fire is a fire that does not exceed 1 meter (3 feet) in diameter and shall be a minimum of 3 meters (10 feet) from any combustible material and adjacent property lines. Only paper or kindling shall be used to start the fire. Leaves, composable material, and yard waste shall not be burned in urban areas.

Do I need a burn permit for a burn barrel?

Burn barrels do not require a burn permit. Burn Barrels are not permitted in urban areas unless used for a strike/lockout and are located on an industrial or commercial property under constant supervision.

Do I need a permit?

If you want to have an open-air fire larger then 1 meter and are located in the rural area to burn brush, yard waste, lumber then yes.

Can I have an open air burn greater than 5 meters (16.5 feet) in diameter?

Exemptions to the Open Air Burn By-law can only be made by the Chief Fire Official or their designate but will require a site visit.
